Props to these four men!

Many have spoken out against the epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses, and many others have spoken out against the booze-fueled party culture in which sexual assaults often take place and the “progressivism” that blurs distinctions between different kinds of assault.
While the pundits and policymakers debate the issue, four guys at North Carolina State University are doing something proactive (and unorthodox): inventing a nail polish that can detect date rape drugs.

I want stock in this! What a wonderful and brilliant idea!

I've never been able to wrap my head around the whole reality of rape drugs. It frankly astounds me that there are enough willing individuals to produce the product, bring it to the market, and deliver it into the hands of rapists. That's a lot of rapists-by-proxy even before it makes it to the final perp.

I like how if you start to type 'ghb' into Google, the top result from Google's autocomplete is 'ghb recipe'. Date rapists are getting self-sufficient.

I hope this turns out to work well but lets be clear about something...
A White House report highlights a stunning prevalence of rape on college campuses, with 1 in 5 female students assaulted while only 1 in 8 student victims report it.

That is a load of horse feces.

Those guys are probably doing it to just get girlfriends.

I suppose I can conceive of a single rapist learning to make his own drugs. I also understand some people take GHB recreationally, so in that case it may be easy to "forgive one's self" as a supplier of the drug when some of your customers use it for nefarious purposes.

I've just known a fair assortment of drug dealers in my time, many of which offered quite the diversity of product, but I never met a single one that was offering roofies. It's true that I never requested roofies, so it's possible they were there and I didn't know it, but it still seems really far-fetched to me.

Well to be fair, it's not exactly "produced" for illicit means. It has pharmaceutical/medicinal purposes.

Otherwise, yes. But I gave up on my disbelief, considering there are active sex slave trading circles even here in the US.

The underground is a vile sect of society, and has more "I never would have guessed!" types in it than we all imagine initially.

That is what I thought. I can't find any recent data (assuming the numbers are different from older studies done 10 or so years ago) that indicate drugging has increased significantly enough to warrant this kind of product.

I mean, bravo for them. They are capitalizing on fear of being raped and nobody will argue their product is a bad thing. A single prevented rape would make it worth it, right?

The people who came up with that number assumed that if the girl has had one drop of alcohol before sex, she was raped. Even if the girl said she wasn't raped.

I suspect campus rape statistics are about as accurate as drunk driving statistics.

How can the nail polish detect it? Do they stick their finger into their drink to see if it's drugged?

"Oh just let me check it right quick"

*dips finger*

"Oh, I don't feel so well I need to go home"

As has been said the bigger issue is sex while drunk though anything that can nab schmucks that use ghb etc is fine by me.

I couldn't help but notice the political jibe from Beck's site implying "progressives" are behind date rape -- very nice. Doesn't quite blame them but muddies the water by suggesting the policies they promote are to blame.
