Proprietary/ special laptop components

So I was taking apart an old sony laptop and I found some proprietary-ish components for laptops. The ide hard-drives are easy because I have a special adapter for that so that I was able to hook it up to my desktop.

But what about floppies/cd-roms? They had special connectors that were white squarish/rectangle...sort of like usb I guess. How would I use them on a desktop?

Another thing is, for laptop hard drives that use sata, is the sata connector the exact same as that for the desktop (therefore requiring no special adapters)?

Thanks all.

Oh, and one last thing...Anyone know where I can get an lcd controller? (buying it, scavenging it from other stuff, etc) Like, do normal desktop lcds have lcd controllers that would allow me to use the lcd screen in the sony laptop I took apart? (with a vga output).
