Can't we just give the fundies Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas and Kentucky and let them run their own cult-like government into the ground without involving the rest of us?

This seems like a stupid unenforceable law. For instance if you are going to study business or social studies or economics you have to have some look at what communism, socialism, democracy, and a republic, and also a dictatorship, or kingdom is and how they work. All of these systems have pros and cons. The USA is not a pure system of any of these specific systems of government. We have a mix of the aspects of many of these. You can not outlaw instruction in any and all things you consider unamerican. It is better to try to develop a study of all of them to better understand our our form of government works. The problem is that many institutions of supposed higher learning are more interested in doctrination of its students rather than teaching them to think for themselves and to apply logic.

Adolph Hitler knew how to play the bitter for votes. You go with the bitterness, not try to fix it. Down hill is just so much easier than up.

The real dominant culture in America is Britney, Paris, Hannah Montana. American Idol, along with consumerism.

I hope that is not what they are trying to protect.

I don't have a problem with the basic idea behind this legislation, I just have a problem with the fact that it's vague and for all practical purposes unenforceable.

The basic idea that public funds should not be used to teach children things that go against the basic values of the country is fine, and I don't think public money should go towards institutions that base membership on race -- that just serves to separate us instead of bringing us together.

sounds like a great law to me.

"This bill basically says, 'You're here. Adopt American values,' " said Kavanagh, a Fountain Hills Republican. "If you want a different culture, then fine, go back to that culture."

the measure would prohibit students of the state's universities and community colleges from forming groups based in whole or part on the race of their members, such as the Black Business Students Association at Arizona State University or Native Americans United at Northern Arizona University. Those groups would be forbidden from operating on campus.

This is one of the stupider laws I've seen in quite awhile. (not easily done!) I know it's wrong, but as another poster above mentioned, sometimes I just want to leave these fools to their ignorance. Suppressing 'un-american' ideas? Are we back in the 1950's or something?

What is "anti-western?" What are "American values?" What is sedition within a democracy?

It seems like this Pearce is trying to saying that Mexican and Native American cultures are anti-western and un-American, in which case I think he's a fsckin' idiot.

Quote from the article:

Wow.....what an idiot. Does this mean we all have to adopt American Indian values, since they were here first and we need to adopt their culture?

Ummmm......

"Pearce, a Mesa Republican, said his target isn't diversity instruction, but schools that use taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate students in what he characterized as anti-American or seditious thinking."

Depending on who you ask or where you are, saying that invading Iraq was a mistake could be considered seditious thinking.

That being said, I would totally support this law if it guaranteed me a free flag lapel pin made in China.

It would be okay to form campus groups based on a particular religion or a particular sex, but not on the basis of race?

This law is unconstitutional.

you really have no idea what america is about do you...

here's a hint. America is absolutely NOT about abandoning your culture and traditions in exchange for the liberties we enjoy.

What's great about understanding in America is that it is "understanding that allows people like us to tolerate a person such as yourself."

Sir I am here with the Anti-American Police. You dont have an American Flag, so all of your residents will be beat with a cane until you put one up.

Why is it that the people who proclaim most vigorously that they stand for "American values" are usually the ones least likely to embrace the freedom of individuals to make their own choices?

Last time I checked, the right to think whatever the hell you want and say whatever the hell you want is the FIRST fundamental American value. And I think it's important to teach that value in our educational system, and the best way to do that is to actually present different ideas. We don't need more Americans growing up to be goose-stepping "patriots", there's enough of that already.
