Pooh.

<< Two California legislators have introduced separate bills that would impose fees on PCs, monitors and other electronic devices to cover the costs of recycling those goods when they become obsolete.
...would establish a state program to recycle CRT (cathode-ray tube) devices including computer monitors and television sets. The bill sets July 1, 2003, as the starting date by which every retailer that sells CRT devices in the state must begin collecting from consumers an as yet unspecified fee that would go toward funding the program.
>>

<< The Romero legislation encompasses virtually every high-tech product a consumer might buy, including computer and video monitors, desktop and notebook PCs, and handheld gadgets >>

Two bills were proposed by two different folks. No idea how much extra it would be, but higher prices always suck :(

Its a hidden cost that hasn't been addressed, so we the consumers have gotten the benefit of this loophole. But its wrong for us to be free riders, don't you think?

Recycling? Nearly all obsolete PC parts are used as test systems so n00bs can learn about computers or used for decorations. I haven't heard anyone take an old computer and recycle it. They aren't empty pop cans.

blah. i've never heard of anyone recycling parts.

I've heard of companies giving old pcs and components away to needy places, but that's about it.

Blasted higher prices. College already makes me broke.

It's probably true that few people throw computer parts away nowadays. What about in 20 years though? 50 years?

While not many folks throw these away, remember this tax is charged when you BUY the item, not get rid of it :(

I don't like the idea anymore than anyone else. However, if the tax came when people recycled them, it would probably take a long time to get people to actual pay rather than just tossing their old pcs in the dumpster.
