proper shutdown, yet scandisk

hi, i've a problem whereby the system would scandisk when booted eventhough it was properly shutdown initially.

AMD DURON 600
ASUS A7V MOBO
64MB PC133 SDRAM
15GB HDD MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX
WINDOWS 98. (1st edition)

 
I don't know if this is your problem but you might want to check out this thread:
Windows Shut Down Problem.

A Microsoft patch is available to slow down the system shutdown so all of the information in the hard drive cashe is written over to the disk before powering down the system. This thread is for IBM drives but a fast Maxtor may also have the same problem. Good luck.
