Proper hat care?

I don't like dirty disgusting looking hats... but even washing them never seems to get them as clean as they were brand new. I usually end up having just one that I wear most of the time, so I guess the wear might be accelerated a little compared to my brother who has like 20 or 30 in his closet.

What's the best way to clean them without colors running or fading or the material getting either really floppy or really stiff?

*EDIT* Title changed.

I use to have one... the kind you put in the dishwasher right? Actually my brother had it... washed one of MY hats first to test it out and the colors bled like crazy... maybe cause he used dishwasher detergent.

febreeze if you just dont want it to smell anymore; to make it somewhat cleaner, use those hat cleaners they sell @ lids or something. (I have like 10-12 hats I think, all New Era; they're really the best hat company imho; I can't stand wearing a non-fitted hat anymore.)

Well my hat doesn't smell... the one I'm wearing now is brand new. I just want to keep it clean in the future... and still wear it =)

yeah, he shouldn't have used dishwasher detergent......better to rub a little soap on it beforehand (not very much) and then run it through the dishwasher....
