I am building a new system. I have decided on most parts but am still hung up on motherboard. I will be using the OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3. Seems every board I pick uses the marvell controller, from every thing Ive read thats not good and will hamper this drive.

I will never be over-clocking,system will be used for heavy RAW format photo editing in Photoshop. Not a gamer but I still want an high performance board

Will be using 12 gigs of Ram

I do want at least 2 PCI Expres Slots although will never Sli

Looking for a rock solid 1366 board around 200.00 MUST be under $250.00

My parts list may seem extreme for a non gamer but i like to build for longevity.

Is Sandy Bridge what I need to look for?

Not hung up on any manufacture but would like it to be one of the top 3. Am familiar with and like Asus and has worked well for me in the past.

I am dead set on using the OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3 and do not want to change that

So far:

Win 7 pro 64 Bit

Intel Core i7-970 Gulftown 3.2GHz 6 x 256KB

ALL X58 boards use the Marvell controller for SATA-3, as far as I know.

Welcome to the forums!

That explains why I could not find what I wanted. Well am I wasting my money on this drive and will the read write hit be very noticeable on daily Photoshop usage?

I am thinking it should still be faster than my Raid 0 Rapture setup

If thats the case whats your opinion on this board
ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s

Again thanx dac

Hi

Just a few things:
Sandy Bridge CPUs won't work on a socket 1366 mobo, ever. You'll need a socket 1155 board for that. This has native SATA 6GB/s too. I wouldn't buy a socket 1366 system new totday, especially if you don't plan to run a SLI setup (Even if, I don't think a 8/8 setup is actually THAT much slower than 16/16).
Don't bother buying expensive overclocker memory. Not woth it. You won't see performance gains in real-world applications (other than benchmarks) that is worth the cost.
You don't need a 1000W PSU. A Intel desktop CPU has 130W TDP top, most are much lower. Even the most demanding graphicscard won't draw much more than 300W in normal scenarios (other than stuff like furmark). A good 500W PSU is really enough. Everything bigger will just waste power/your money.

I would totally buy a drive called rapture. The ASUS sabertooth X58 is a nice board. I use Crucial C300s on my Marvell ports, and they fly with photoshop... they're also pretty cheap.

Your best bet might be to get an Intel 320-series drive, and run it off of the ICH10R. If you've never used an SSD before, I hope you have a change of underwear.

Bench claims the i7 2600k is faster at Photoshop anyway (retouch artist's test). I'd just get a Sandy Bridge 1155 board with a 2600k, save a bunch of money vs a Gulftown 970, and then you're good to go with your Vertex 3 on a proper Intel 6 gbit SATA controller.

The Vertex 3 is awesome. My limited experience with SSDs (and every article on Anandtech about them) says they simply stop all over a mechanical hard drive; it should have no trouble beating your Raptor RAID array.

If you're dead set on the 1366, perhaps look for a (probably very expensive) PCIe-based 6 gbit SATA card that doesn't take issue with the Vertex 3?

Alternatively, wait for socket 2011 - you can have hex cores AND it'll be good with the Vertex 3... and it'll beat the 2600k.

sir just to let you know I run a sata 2 western digital ssd on the intel ich 10 south bridge currently just because i have room for it but i have benched it on the marvall controller also just to see the difference and they are both almost identical...only reason i dont run it off there is boot up time looks at the marvall and adds a few seconds to boot up but performance on sata 2 is unbelieveable compared to a standard hard drive..my sons computer is basically the same as in my sig other than using an evga board and a WD raptor and his is noticeably slower than mine doing any thing..no alot but noticeablely faster...the ssd made a huge difference in speed..i use the ssd for win 7 and the 750 gig black as data...just to let you know my personal experience, thats all....
another thought you could always use an add on card sata 2 or 3 and run it off a pci express slot of at least 4 lanes....
