I didn't oppose the measure, but IMO you can blame the addicts/severe pot heads (they usually have other problems) out there for its defeat. Most people know one or more such people who are ruined by drugs or alcohol. Sure, pot may not be as bad as alcohol, but why give people another excuse to be degenerates?

Only thing is that it's so readily available now and doesn't stop people from obtaining it, at least regulating it would provide some needed tax revenue.

Not to mention jobs. Could have helped create some new jobs with our upstart cannabis industry. Honestly how come no one in this country wants to produce things?

Unfortunate it went down by as much as it did. I proudly voted yes, because at the very least we could have seen how well or not so well it would have worked. CA always leads the way technologically and environmentally, adding drugs to the list is important too.

It didn't lose terribly bad, but this + gay marriage being slammed down. I just can't believe it. I'm really jaded over this. Not because weed isn't legal, I'm a medical card holder, but because people actually have no concept of freedom and/or personal responsibility.

Latest results are 44% to 56%. I had this at 50-50 or 52-48 like Prop 8. Definitely way bigger than I thought. And I agree it's a freedom and/or personal responsibility issue. Weed is simply too taboo.

First, the percentage isn't a real representation of those who want it legalized. For some the current system is as far as they want to see it legalized because they are making a ton of money off of it. I've been bringing it up for awhile now because I have seen it first hand. I know a few people who switched side because of some of the non-sense that has been spread.

Damn, prop 19 failing is the biggest disappointed of this round of elections. I wish my state had the balls to do something like Prop 19, but they are too afraid of losing Federal cash.

Because it's a free country (or used to be)?

I would have voted for legalization, and I've never tried pot, and don't plan on it. But I also recognize that I'm not someone else's mommy, and neither is the gov't.

So disappointed in CA, war on drugs will continue. Drain on money and resources. Not too mention encroaching on liberty. Sigh.

Not surprising, given recent polls. Still disappointing though.

In the latest National Geographic magazine they revealed statistics showing that no matter the political leaning, gender, age, or racial demographic... any one group had at least 61% approval of the legalization of marijuana. I was surprised by this.

Maybe all those tokers that wanted to legalize it were too stoned to show up and vote.

To much work for them

I know a few people over there in that "industy" who did not want prop 19 to pass. If it did many of them were planning on moving to CO so they could keep making money.

Much like with any initiative, there are people who benefit from the current system and its not just the cops and jails.

It just sucks because to people in California, its desnt make a huge difference. They can still walk into a store and buy pot. The biggest reason I wanted it to pass was to challenge the federal system and encourage other states to follow suit.

In the future I think it might be better to try something like this in WA or OR where there is not so much of an industry built up around MMJ.

The people of California once again prove they are pricks. Well done.

I love the Yahoo article covering it...

Supporters of Proposition 19 blamed Tuesday's outcome on the conservative leanings of older voters who participate in midterm elections. They also acknowledged that young voters had not turned out in sufficient numbers to secure victory, but said they were ready to try again in two years.

Yeah, cause possibly they were all too high to give a damn. :D
