$1 million bill leads to arrest

COVINGTON, Georgia (AP) -- A Georgia woman who tried to use a fake $1 million bill to buy $1,675 worth of merchandise at Wal-Mart was arrested, and police later found two more of the bills in her purse.

The U.S. Treasury does not make $1 million bills, but similar-looking currency is sold in some souvenir shops. The fake bill featured a picture of the Statue of Liberty, police said.

"It looks real, but of course there's nothing real about this," said Stacey Cotton, police chief in Covington, about 30 miles southeast of Atlanta. "People do crazy things all the time."

A store clerk immediately noticed the bill was fake when 35-year-old Alice Regina Pike handed it to her on Friday, Cotton said.

Pike then tried to use two gift cards worth only $2.32 to buy the merchandise, but when that did not work she again asked to cash the $1 million bill, Cotton said. The store then called police.

Pike was jailed on forgery charges. A woman who answered the phone at the jail said she did not know if Pike has a lawyer.

Jeeez, how do you spend one and a half grand in a WalMart? It's not like they have a whole bunch of high-end merchandise there to pad your bill with. Did she buy a couple gross of cheap Chinese plastic gadgets and a pallet of Dale Earnhardt Jr. memorial t-shirts too?

WalMart cashier: "Yes ma'am, and your total will be $1,675.00."

Woman: "No problem.... hey, do you have change for a million?"

I guess you will have to charge everyone with felonous stupidity then. Federal Reserve Notes have no more backing than that bogus $1 million bill. Only difference is people are so stupid to think FRNs have value just because the gubmint says they do.

no, the US currency is backed by the hundreds of nations that have them in their banks. 2/3rds of all US dollars sit in foreign banks, and 1/2 of all US bonds are owned by foreigners. they will ensure US stays on top, because they would end up actually losing more than us, twice as much to be exact....

Bahahhaha, my wife came home taliing about this as she heard it on the radio. Covington is East of Atlanta out I-20 and straight down from me via Hwy124 about 35 miles.

But she was trying to help the Economy, The President and CAD & Co by being a super Consumer.

They only have U.S. dollars because it is considered by many to be the most stable currency in the world (the euro may be changing that in short order). Those nations don't back U.S. currency at all, they are just along for the ride. Furthermore, there is nothing those nations could do if the U.S. entered hyperinflation. Where did you get this idea that they are "backing" our currency?

Fiat currency is based on an illusion which is perpetuated by billions of people, it doesn't matter how many people believe in the illusory value, it is still an illusion nontheless. There aren't different degrees of illusions, you can't say that woman's $1 million bill is more illusory than $1 million in $100 FRNs. You want proof that fiat currency is based on an illusion? Look at inflation, 1500% inflation since 1913. What caused this inflation? One thing and one thing alone, the expansion of the money supply by the Federal Reserve beyond the output of the economy year after year after year. If money wasn't an illusion this wouldn't be possible, the Fed would have had to have gotten the money to inflate the money supply from somewhere, but it didn't. It literally just printed it up.

Man CNN is getting to be a rag. I couldn't believe they posted this story. Obviously there is something wrong with this poor woman, and they posted it anyway. Now when walmart cashes the 1 million dollar bill, that's a story.

Can't bame CNN, this technically happened in theor backyard as it is a short ride out I-20 from Atlanta to Covington or can even take the smaller road Covington Hwy from the city.

Look at all the crap like this that happens in Georgia. The folks in here notice it too, this State is a disaster.

Better than helping the Democrats and Dave & Co. by being a unemployed, social security dependant bum on the street.
