I'm planning to take charge of the family business here and really start raising our income.

First I want to start by getting 10x+ more people to the Website. I think I will first re-do the website as it looks pretty unprofessional. I don't know who's running the site, but I'm sure I can find some way to take control of it. This time of year is our best time for business, and i want to take advantage of it as much as possible. I know you guys and gals will have some good tips to promote it. I've looked around google and haven't found much good info for website promotion. There do seem to be a lot of sites that will submit your website to 20 or more search engines 'for free', but I found at most places I looked that those sites are shady and usually want money.

I want to get more traffic to the website, but I'm not going to spam email or at forums or any crap like that. I'm gonna try to play by the rules. Thanks for any good advice/links.

-Get business cards with the web address and what they do printed on them. They can be cheap ones from iprint.com and it'll be fine. Hand a couple out to all of your relatives to give to people, pin a couple up on public bulletin boards, give them to people if the business ever comes up in a conversation. If you simply tell someone about the site, they'll forget about it fast. If you give them something that they'll cram in their pocket, they have a better chance of checking it out later that evening when they empty their pockets.

-Consider taking out an ad in a local church bulletin. It's probably quite cost effective. You might be able to land an ad spot for less than a hundred bucks a month. Depends on the type of business though.

-If you are looking to get yourself higher on search rankings, you need people to link to you, and you need to make sure your site's META tags are well defined. Google has a great tips page on getting your ranking higher, and whatever works for google will usually work for other engines, too. Get friends to put a link on their page, put the link in your sig, etc.

-Make flyers and go door to door. The printing cost of flyers is very cheap, and it may seem like door to door is stupid, but if you go up one entire street and only one or two people even VISIT the site, you're making good progress.

Spending money on good SEO services is worth tons more than the ripoff that is Google Adwords.

Good websites consist of web pages conforming to standards, and proper use of meta tags, as well as good search engine optimization.

All of this can be done yourself, all it takes is a little time and work.

A good place to start.

Definitely SEO. Also just get a link to your page on as many pages as possible. A good way to do that in all seriousness is to put a link to your site in your signature on forums you frequent.

For instance if you have your link on all of some forums you visit, it wil help your pagerank cause you will have backlinks all over the place. This website alone has a pagerank of 7. If you get your site linked on high pageranking sites, it will in turn help out your page rank.

It takes time to get a high PR though, hell I don't even have ne yet for my site lol. chances are that forums you visit are pretty popular and most likely have a PR of 5 or ablve, so putting it in your sig won't hurt anything. Also try to do link exchanges, or pay for advertising as others suggested. good luck!

SEM = Search Engine Marketing. Buying traffic through bidding on keywords.
