ok, i just rearrange all my IDE devices (hd's / cd-rom / cd-r).
Setp up:
I have 3 HD's running off of the motherboard IDE interface. No problems there, eveything is working great.
Now i have my cd-rom, and my Cd-r Running off of a Promise Ultra66 PCI card.
During the startup detection the devices attached to the Promise controller i get this msg.

Detecting Devices........

D0 Atapi-CD ROM DRIVE 50 MAX
D1 Not Detected
D2 Plextor Cd-R PX W1210
D3 Not Detected

ok, so far so good. Everthing seems good so far.

Then i get this msg.

Ultra66 bios is not installed because there are no drives attached.

Is ther away to fix this problem? Is this a problem at all?

When Window2k loads up both devices work properly. should i not worry about it?

I have the latest Drivers/bios for the IDE controller.

thanks for any help.

it might need a hard drive attached to the promise.... you can try attaching a spare HD and see.

It's not an error message. All it's telling you is that no ATA66 HD is connected to the controller.

Yup what they said. It is seen as a SCSI cotroller and the bios is only loaded when a hdd is attached.

what the bios of the controller is actually used for??? ===>>> the bios on the controller allows the devices connected to the controller to be booted off of... basically, you can't boot off of the drives without the bios of the card being used.

but, with respect to windows, you should still be able to use the drives on the card, even if the bios has not been activated. DOS however, is a different matter, you'll need to install the DOS drivers for the card ;-)

a wise person once said: don't fix what isn't broken. =) it was not me though ;-)

obenton is right, its not an error message, its just telling you the facts. you dont have any drives connected to the promise controller, so it has no need to load the drivers for it. if you plugged a hard drive into the controller the message would change

correct, in this case the BIOS allows you to bootstrap off the hard disk that is supposed to be connected to the drive, giving it the ability to boot the drives on it. Without hard drives attached, it doesn't bother and just gives this message. As previously noted, SCSI controllers do the same thing quite often....
