Hi all,

I have been interested in Linux for years and am starting my first project. I am attempting to get Linux, really any flavor that I can run a web server off of (preferably Apache?), running on a Pentium Pro 200 machine that I inherited. I wasn't sure where to start, but after reading for a while, I found that most people like Debian. Then I read about Knoppix. I downloaded the Knoppix CD and it booted up ok on the machine. I decided that I would like to install Knoppix to my hard drive, as I read that it contains Apache already. I found some information about Knoppix hard drive installs on www.knoppix.net. After further reading, I have found that it is tricky, but not impossible, to get the Promise Ultra 100 TX2 IDE controller card to work with Linux. I have this card because I purchased a 180GB Western Digital to replace the 40GB in my Windows XP Pro PC and did not need the bundled controller card to get it working. The Pentium Pro machine that I have supports a max of 8GB hard drive. I would like to use my 40GB 7200RPM hard drive, so I want to use the Promise card.

I'm think that I could eventually figure this out on my own, but I am hoping that someone can help me out or point me in the direction of some good resources. So far I have been looking on debian.org, knoppix.net, and other random places.

If anyone has any thoughts on how to make this work, please let me know.

Hi,
I've got this Promise card on one of my servers, it's not causing any troubles so far. However, if you are going to install Debian you'll need to
specify that you want 2.4 kernel (type bf24 at boot, or just check help you'll find there), there is no Promise TX support in 2.2 kernels.
