I have a new Asus A7V 266-E moboard, Windows XP, with one 60 gig IBM hard drive installed to the promise controller on an 80 pin cable. In addition, I have a CD R/W, DVD and Zip 100 installed to the two IDE moboard sockets. It all works. However, during the boot sequence I get a message that reads "Ultra 100 is not installed because there are no drives attached". In addition, in the device manager there is a yellow mark on the Primary IDE Channel with a message "The device cannot find enough free resources that it can use - You must disable one of the other devices on the system." Do I have too many devices installed? My goal is to get a fast connection for my hard drive, I do not care about the SCSI/RAID sync features.

Look for memory or IRQ conflict. Looks like 2 devices are sharing an IRQ.
See if a device (via device manager) is set to automatic, and if you have a free one left.

1_ Make sure you activate the Promise BIOS in the CMOS SETUP.
2_ Make sure the jumper in the mobo is set to ATA100 and not RAID
3_ You should have pressed F6 during Win XP installation and installing correct drivers.

I was having almost the exact same problem with my Promise Ultra100 TX2 controller on a K7S5A. No matter what I did and what slot the controller was in, the BIOS would never expand and load. I called Promise and they said that they were getting a lot of calls on the VIA 266 Northbridge which is the northbridge that is used on the Asus A7V266-E boards. They said they were working on a new BIOS that will hopefully be released soon...although this may explain the problems you are having, it didn't help mine. But I was able to get the controller to go after finally disabling the onboard sound on my K7S5A. I'm not sure if it will work for you but it might be worth a try....good luck!

You can free same IRQs, disable Serial port 2, disable Parallel Port ESC o something, let it as EPP. Disable 2cond and 3thinrd USB channel (if not used), let UBS 1 (2 conectors attached to the mobo).
