Promise controller vs Linux

The FAQ project is rather long. I thought I'd get a solution before posting this to it as a query.

Just installed Openlinux 3.1 server - Need: fileserver.
The install was quick and painless, KDE looks nice...BUT
It would not recognize the Promise Ultra 100 controller and the (2) 40 gig hard drives on it.
It also would not recognize a 3cr990 3com network card.
I've searched the net and read several people's exploits getting IDE controllers installed, without success myself
Suggestions? Is there a linux Distribution that would support the controller?

Thanks,

Joshua

I have an Ultra100TX2 that works fine in Debian (3.0 AKA woody AKA testing). It may even work in potato (2.2, current). 120GB, 60GB, and 40GB drives connected.

You probably just need to get a more recent kernel, look for the docs on compiling a custom kernel or see if Caldera has updated RPMs of one.

I've never heard of a 3cr990 so I can't help you there.
