ok, still working on my boss's computer. now i cant get the friggin promise controller to work. it's really weird.

here's what i'm seeing.

??? it does this regardless whether i've got the drive plugged into the ide1 or ide 2 (as shown in that pic) ports on the card. and it doesnt matter what kind of drive i hook up to it. what is really weird to me is that it says that the drive is detected, but then says that the bios is not installed because there are no drives attached. WTF does that mean? no drives attached to the mobo ide? no drives attached to the card? very strange. needless to say that no drives are detected in windows.

also this controller was working until yesterday, so i'm thinking it might be some goofy setting in the motherboard bios, but i'm not sure. it's an MSI K7T266 PRO.

I believe you can update their firmware (I've had to do that once or twice to fix a problem...)

How bout you try that?

pdate.

ok, now i plugged both hard drives, master and slave, into the card and it starts to boot just fine, but then i get this screen. always.

Here's another shot

so now do i have to do a full reinstall of windows? or can you guys think of any way around that?

is it possible the controller was set to RAID instead of reg. HDD controller in the BIOS?

it's supposed to do that when you only have optical drives attached to it. It'll work fine in windows.

It doesnt work fine in windows. that's the problem.

if i have any optical drives hooked up to it, they're not seen in windows. although they used to be. i used to have this dvd burner hooked up to it a few days ago before the cmos clearing and the reformatting of the drive, but now it does this....

try these things:

-update the bios
-move card to different slot
-try different optical drive

I'm wondering if by clearing the cmos you've unknowing turned on "boot sector virus protection" from within bios
