Promise 20276 Question (and other Qs)

Promise Questions:

1. Does the hardware RAID on the Promise 20276 do all the processing itself, or does it offload some of the work to the CPU? If so, how much would that degrade performance on an Athlon XP 1800+?

2. Is it possible, and is there a free utility, to convert an existing NTFS or FAT32 partition on a single drive to a RAID 1 NTFS or FAT32 partition striped across multiple drives? (i.e. can additional drives be later added to a RAID 1 without backing up data?)

General Performance Q:

3. How much difference would one expect to notice in performance between a WD1200BB 120 GB 7200rpm drive with 2 MB of cache and a WD1200JB 120 GB 7200 rpm drive with 8 MB of cache? Is it worth the $40?

Thanks in advance all,

i too have questions about the promise controller...what are the highs and lows of the highpoint 373 and Promise PDC 20276? i will be setting up 2 60gig Maxtor 740dx drives in raid0 and need to know if i will be lacking in performance with the promise controller. thanks!

i have found the promise card more simple to setup than other brands

no the card dosn't do it's own processing,

i hate western digital so in my opinion, the are both ass, i have built hundreds of machines for retail and had more failures from western dog's that all other brands combined.
i would give $40 for the extra cache
