Is this your high school prom? Be a man about it and tell your boss that you're going to the prom. Christ!! This is a once-in-a-lifetime event! And you're telling us that you're mother wants you to miss your own prom? Double Christ!!

youre parents are trying to teach you to be responsible.

i would say go in and tell him the situation, and ask if you could leave at 515 instead of 930 or something, or tell him you will pick up a shift at another time that they need filled.

You should have made sure you already had that day off anyways.... but go in and talk to the manager or try to find somebody that could cover your shift

Do you work in the kind of place where somebody else is going to be made to stay
over for a manditory extra shift if you call in ? I used to and gotta tell you I used
to HATE the creeps who would call in when everybody knew they weren't sick.

Why not see if you can get a co-worker to trade shifts with you, even if you've got to
toss a few $$$ their way to get em to do it ?

Screw work.

If the company you work for is so inflexible as to not allow you time off, you have no future with them anyway.

I'd say tell them you are not coming in.

if this is senior prom, this kid's earnings over the summer might be already earmarked towards his college costs and his parents might have something to say about that. I guess if nobody's gonna get stuck covering him he could always just call out sick, but he best be prepared to take flack for it

How many strikes do you have already? How long before a strike is erased from your record? You should talk to the managers and explain the situation to them. If they won't let you miss an evening of work, then eat the strike and go to prom anyway. Your parents are trying to make you be responsible for yourself. Its their job I to do so I guess, but it is your prom. Do what you need to do.

Of course he should be prepared to take the consequences. One "strike" out of three. I still vote for skipping work - calling in "sick" or leveling with the boss is up to his conscience. But be firm. Of course, he could also offer to work "extra" or try to iron out another compromise.

The prom is a once-in-a-lifetime deal. I say go to it.

Of course prom is important, I was merely suggesting calling out sick ,everybody will know it's BS
partucularly if he already tried to get coverage but it'll be less in the face than "Im just not going to come in"

We are in agreement.

How he handles it is up to him (including understanding the boss' reaction).

does "vacation time" mean anything to you? "paid time off" or "unpaid vacation" not mean anything?

I totally agree with Pundit... be a man, not a liar.

Let's look at what will happen if you miss your prom? You'll feel resentful toward your job and likely think about how you missed a really special occasion for a stupid reason (work) for the rest of your life.

BTW, are you in a union?

You already got your tux. That costs more than what you'll make all weekend at work if yours cost anything like mine did.

Don't worry about msising work.

Go to prom. I don't care how you get out of work, but there are very few high school jobs that are worth skipping prom for. Bagging groceries isn't one of them.

Think about it: in 20 years, what will be the more important memory: senior prom, or your job at albertsons.

Call in sick, skip work, whatever. Even if they fire you, it's worth it for a once in a lifetime experience.

Ask your union rep about the consequences.

How long in advance did you ask for the day off?

Albertsons will not close or fail because you do not show up for work.
