My son and I have an old proliant dl385 g2 but no hard drive and no hard drive backplane. Can we just plug a laptop sata HD into the motherboard with cables? Or do I have to find a backplane?

Well the caddy does not help if there no backplane to connect to. the caddy will physically insert the drive in to the case.

From the look of it no, the drives connect to the backplane and the backplane connects to a HBA/Raid card. as there is no direct SATA/SAS ports on the board

Or at least a SATA/SAS/HBA card to connect the drive to and could run the cables where the backplane would be. but then you have to worry about power as well for the drives

Backplane PN: 407751-001 if you want it
