Projector people

So I plan on mounting the projector on a 7ft ceiling. The throw distance is 10 feet.

Problem is that the 2 projectors(Optoma HD70 and Mistu 1000U) I'm looking at will only give me 72" and 69" respectivley. I was hoping for 94" to 108".

I really wanna stay at or above 720P, but if I can get a signifgantly larger picture with a 480P projector, so be it.

If it helps I will be sitting 10-12 feet behind the projector so you see that 72" from 20+ feet away is just too small.

Am I doing something wrong, am I just not understanding how the throw distance and projectors work together? Can the 2 projectors I listed be configured to show a larger picture at the same throw distance?

if not, is there a 480P projector that can produce the size image I'm looking for at a 10ft throw?
thanks a ton in advance.

Going off the projector central calculators...

I'm getting 16:9 87", 4:3 71" max on the HD70 at 10'

I'm getting 16:9 85", 4:3 70" max on a Mitsu 1000U at 10'

LCD projectors tend to have larger zoom capabilities.

For example my Panasonic AE900U can do 16:9 100", 4:3 82" at 10'

Some projectors will have additional lenses (like short throw optimized) that will allow you to change the characteristics of how the image is projected.

I used the calculator as well, didn't use the zoom control on the left however. that did at least bring ir up a foot.

I just started looking at the Optoma DV10 Movitetime, that would give me 109 at 10" 16:9. 480P though. But at 20ft away I wonder if I would notice the difference. So $400 less for 22 more inches. And some deals come with free screens.

Yeah, that's a short throw DLP, but I think that particular one might not be able to be ceiling mounted. It has a DVD player integrated into it and it's optimized for use on a table or something.

What does this part mean?

By the way, an ~85" screen size at 10' seating distance is a quite respectable 34.3 degree viewing angle.

the seating distance is 20ft away. 10 feet behind the projector.

Oh, I read 10-12 feet behind the projector as 10-12 feet behind the screen 😛

Gotcha now

Of course my next question is why not move the projector farther back? Something with the architecture or the room?

doh, yeah I need to ceiling mount to make sure I am projecting over furniture.

exactly, the house actually had the 2 rooms separated in the plans, but we had them connect the 2 rooms when they built it.

Let me see if I can dig up some pics. and I'll illustrate what I have to work with.

I know it's not as clean as a ceiling mounting (and I know if I had an option for ceiling mounting I'd do it), but would something like a projector stand possibly work?

I also just tried to plug in some 20' throw distances to see if you could mount it behing the seating on a stand. You're looking at a screen that would be close to 6' tall and 10.5' wide at that range. If you can get your room pitch black, the brightness might still be ok at that size.

The Panasonic AE900U again comes out with some very reasonable screen sizes as options at that distance (99" and up)

The newer Panasonic AX100U has similar zoom/size characteristics at that 20' distance and higher brightness as well.

While you're waiting, is mounting behind the seating an option?

What kind of budget are you thinking? Is ~$1k the upper limit for the projector itself?

mounting behind the seating is impossible since the seating is a bed and there is a ceiling fan in the way.

$1200 max, and not sure about the screen. Was hoping just to paint the wall a color that would work well for a projector image.

Would putting it on a low shelf / table at the end of the bed work?

A wall works pretty darn well. You can check out AVSforum's projector area if you want to get ideas about custom paint mixes if you want to get fancy.

I'm a lot happier with my actual screen and masking system I made though. Having a real border to the image really helps it look its best.

So how is this set up now? The LCD TV gets turned around when you want to watch from bed?

Is the bed going to be the only place you're watching the projected image?

yep the tv is on a turntable and gets turned when we go to bed. The TV will be getting moved to the ceiling above the bed or the spare bedroom once the projector is installed.

Will also be watching from the computer room where the chairs are.

How far away will you be when in the other room? It looks like you're just a few feet from the wall if the chairs are going to stay there.

yep, just a foot or two when sitting in the room where the image will be. But it's more than enough since I just glance on whats on every now and then.

from the wall it is going to be projected on to the projector is 10 feet
from the projector to where the bed is and where most of the viewing will be is another 12-14 feet.

so 22+ feet from the image to the viewing area.

Just a FYI that a foot or two from the screen may mean that your head will get hit with the projected image (depending on the angle it's coming from) and it will be pretty hard to see what's going on.

It would be like sitting closer than the front row in a movie theater and it will look like pixelated crap 😛

When I sit down I am a little over 4 feet tall in a 9ft ceiling room. Just have to project on the 5 feet above me head 🙂

BTW, Happy Birthday me, 30 years.
