Project Suggestions for FX CPU?

I've always built AMD systems in the past, but apparently I should have done some more research before I dived back in to system building.

I'm not thrilled with the performance on the FX processors I have, at least not in eOn.

Is this normal? If it is, are there any projects where these FX processors perform decently on? My old 3600+ and the C2D that I picked up for super cheap are pumping out work units faster than the FX processors.

I went thru the bios on the 8320 and made sure it wasn't throttling down. It is operating at about 53° C at load. I wouldn't think it would be throttling at that temperature.

The 6300 is running at around 45° C at load.

Some of the times are especially bad, but I think that's because I was converting MKV to MP4. I'm done with that now, so the recent wu times are without anything else running.

For this layman, and no overclocking...................

I have one FX 6100 running FAH and it is keeping up with the I7s. I can't give you exact numbers because I have all of them cut back to six CPU threads so the GPUs can go full out, but their output is comparable.

YMMV :)

Those do seem like unusually long times. I have a couple of i5-4570 computers doing some very limited part-time work on eon2 right now and they are averaging just slightly over 370 seconds per work unit.

However, using that computer for other things like video conversion could definitely make a big difference.

And have you checked to make sure all of the drivers (especially the chipset drivers) are installed?

I installed the catalyst package. I'll try the download from the mobo site.

Edit: Still showing close to 30 minutes per wu after chipset driver install from Asus website.

I'll go out on a limb.
The SkyNet POGS, Yoyo, NumberFields, Asteroids, (there must be more that others will have to point out). I think you should be happy with AMD performance on any of those. Bradtech has similar cpu on POGS and it does well compared to Intel. AMD does well on NumberFields and as no TeAmmate is running it at the moment we will fall behind in Formula BOINC eventually. Asteroids@home pays good on any processor and is also a Formula point getter.

Also, eOn does 2X ppd on Linux compared to Windows.

PS: As you can see, no body wants to say anything bad about AMD, we are all rooting for them and hoping for a come back!

I root for AMD also but the FX in 8 bottle necks game performance. The FX 8 is good with
ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 AM3+, AMD 990X to run and learn VMware ESXi remotely (the board accepts 32 bit level VM commands and some other stuff).
But price vs heat kills amortization. Intel has higher thermal ceilings. In outside air cooled facilities I read up on the intake limits and they need the higher ceiling to function. The plant in Ireland is outside air cooled I can't remember the company owners but it has been in the news.
AMD has no business chip sets for the desktop and Intel has a path laid out functioning right now. What has happened is Intel got beat in 2004 in the speed game then AMD had wafer plants. Intel with all the departments and pockets of Engineers produced en-mass products of Ideas. Now AMD employs only 10,000+ employees. The phrase comes back from the PC clone wars... No one ever got fired for buying Intel. I own a AMD $350 8 core processor that runs a 3.4 GHz all turbo and the motherboard has 2 cpu's It is running Ubuntu and runs multiple tasks. However I don't know how to generate any meaningful quantifiable benchmarks that I can compare with it has the Pile Driver Architecture. I think I got a steal of a price with rdimm by Kingston.
I built a A-10 6800 with Bio-star because of the Hi-Fi quality of the audio and it didn't come in Intel in a trade for genealogy work.
I still find a place for AMD.
Video cards for science it's now been switched to all AMD. I sold my old ones to prepare for buying new ones and mining @#$^*&&*!!!
AMD for gaming in CrossFireX I still have problems because of frames. But 4K at 24 FPS or 30 FPS to be honest still needs more GPU power. In 4K Far Cry 3 3 GB of frame buffer in demo mode for a 680 Ti dies for 2 seconds on start. The 290 versions 4GB uses almost all the 4 GB in 4K on Far Cry 3 when explored with other software on looking at whats happening.
AMD has the console gaming market.
I'm not sure on some of the odd variations (low power) of Server consoles.
When I have looked on AMD's web site on rack servers there is listed only a very small functionally vetted rack units.
Companies like hp Enterprise I don't know what is sold in desktop PC.
A site to Join for IT news with 4 million members and vendors is Spiceworks.com
If it weren't for AMD Intel like they use to, set prices in the stratosphere. Prices for server cpus seems to me like touching gold for the high heat units getting as much as they can on a chip or more cores at lower speeds.

I have an FX 8350 running stock. The aftermarket Heatsink and fan in my signature does well for me. I've been primarily running skynet pogs lately after hitting 1 million credits in Asteroids@home. I've found it can beat the older i7 920 and trade blows with the 2600k some. The FX 8350 won't beat the 3k and 4k I7s but it's not priced to. For the price I feel I got a good deal for the performance I get out of it. I'd suggest joining the skynet pogs or asteroids@home projects. I'm surprised your FX 8320 is getting beat by a Core 2 Duo and 3600+. if you were doing other tasks outside of running projects it's possible that's the explanation. I've disabled some of the CPU specific settings in the BIOS like cool and quiet.

Check out this thread at Eon. http://eon.ices.utexas.edu/eon2/forum_frames.php

Looks like they are using a GNU compiler for the windows app. Can't blame them for not wanting to spend the money on a commercial compiler I guess.

I'd move your rig to another project or use linux.

Thanks. I'll probably install Mint on it when I get a chance.

Link just takes you to their forum home page :(

That's weird huh? Any link to a thread or post from that forum just takes to to the forum home page.

The thread is called "low points" which is about 3/4 of the way down the first page. On page 4 of that thread is the comment from the developer on the compiler they are using for the windows app.

I went through the bios and disabled all that stuff. I would be more inclined to think it was a setting somewhere if my FX-6300 wasn't getting terrible times as well. I switched it back to Rosetta once I saw it was performing poorly too.

Yeah, it could be that project. I can run eON also for a little bit to see what I'm getting if you want to compare to my FX 8350.

I've done some work on it, and it's been submitted. I'm not showing up on the team anandtech page yet though. Might take a while I guess for the page to auto update. It was taking around 11-13minutes per workunit.

That would be great.
