if i had the money/time i'd try making a totally silent pc. by that i mean all passive cooling. i know it can be done, it just matters on how much time, money and brains you have ;) anyone ever seen a system done like this?

Nope, I have only seen one with a freeon refrigerant that kept the case temp at a cool 42 degrees Farenheit. It sounded alot quieter than a typical overclocked system with major fannage. Even quiter than a typical pc that was stock. Only thing I couldnt figure out was how he kept the moisture out of the case. I thought condensation would be a problem.
Anyways, that was the best thing I had ever seen and heard.

I believe the new macs use passive cooling. They channel the hot air through the top and use natural air circulation to channel the cool air into the bottom of the case. Their processors probably run cool anyways and such a setup would not work on most pcs.

The Mac cubes do use passive cooling only, and yes, their chips do run cooler... Some friends and I tried to make a hug heasink in metal shop once, we cut the side of a case (actually his dad did that but anyhow) to accomodate the thing... Didn't work all that well... was ok when idling... but after about half an hour of gaming, it would be hot to the touch... I think it was the poor conductivity between the aluminum fins and the origional heatsink. Not to mention, was uglier than hell and we never tried again...
