I may have read a few with experience doing this with the 5x before, but it's probably buried somewhere in the replies.

Now that they're doing the $150 off for the 6P as well, I may be interested to get it (for a cousin).

He has no intention to subscribe further to Fi, so this is just to get the phone. Can he really get the 32 GB version for just $350 + tax + first month ($30 or less) sub? Is it easy to cancel in the first month? He would simply create a throwaway Google account so no number porting is involved and his GV number won't be touched.

Also, this is probably an unnecessary question, but this is the same Nexus being sold on Google Store, right? So it's completely unlocked, etc.

PS: Oh yeah, he definitely derped by just mentioning this to me today. Three days earlier and he could grab a 64 GB for $400 at Amazon Prime Day without any hassle.

The nexus 5x has gotten pretty bad reviews and seems to have very poor build quality, suggest he look at something else.

I did just that.
A throwaway google account and an immediate cancellation of my Fi account. No questions, no problems, just a heavily discounted phone

This is about the 6P, per my second paragraph. The deal with 5X has been for a long time. The deal for 6P just came out around last Wednesday.

Thanks! Now my wife is interested in it as well.

Ah, that's reasonable then.

just keep in mind that 32GB might be painful on a 6P - it was easier to tolerate years back when all cameras were 6-8MP and video was 720p...but today resolutions for both images and videos are through the roof, and the 6P isn't an exception here.

Here's some more info and detail:
I paid $20 for the first month and $10 for the first month's data in order to set up the account. I cancelled after three days day and received almost $28 back!

As I intimated in my last post, it's a no-brainer.

The new nexus phones are out soon, this price will be common in about 6 weeks.

It's a given the new nexus phones will have QC 821chipsets, and a host of other improvements.

Question for Nexus owners - I've been trying out the 5X and it's fine except for one huge annoyance. With the fingerprint reader on the back and the power button on the side, it's annoying to have to pick up the phone to even check the time.

I know some phones support double tap to wake but I can't find the option in settings. Am I missing something or what else do you guys do to glance at your phone?

^^

I use double tap to wake my Nexus 6, but that requires root. I don't believe the 5X supports tap to wake natively either.

do you have to flash a new kernel to it? Any app kills the battery.

Yes, I have a non standard kernel flashed to my device. I am running with the PureNexus ROM, but I believe there are plenty or kernels out there that support tap to wake if you just to go that route.

As I recall, there was a simple file edit that worked to add tap to wake in version 5.x, but I'm not sure if that still works or not. I never tried it, so YMMV in any case.

Argh thanks - I'd prefer not to root it as I'd like to keep using Android Pay. Does seem like quite a usability gap as without some way to wake the phone while on a table, you have to always pick it up.

Android Pay apparently works with the Pure Nexus ROM. I have not tried it myself, but plenty of users at XDA have reported success. I believe there are some other ROMs that have Android Pay working as well at this point.

I don't use the fingerprint reader.

The time is displayed just by moving the phone.
