what are yours?

it's a New Year - resolutions are the popular thing, but what about more of a Project with multiple facets in the new year?

Project Strive 2025 is my project. Instead of making wildly huge goals I have made a bunch of more reasonable ones as minimums and then you can always go higher. Build the foundation for bigger goals.

Outside of work and financial goals I have some such as:

-Cook one new recipe a week. And at least half of them have to be from my existing cookbook collection though, not online.

-Read one book a month - reasonable goal, and hope to break it for sure, but not putting the pressure on myself to read 30 books a year off the get go (something I did easily as a younger fellow)

-Explore more live music - living next to the most diverse city in the world equals tons of amenities. Many I use, but one I haven't is checking out more live music. Not just larger shows but smaller intimate venues, such as my visit to Arthur's Tavern the other week. One focus specifically here is on jazz - jazz on the funky tip.

-Use my car less and less, especially now that I have a Brompton and a Citibike membership. Been doing pretty well at this but want to continue to improve.

-Avoid Amazon except for Kindle purchases. Have started last month by figuring other places to get things from in different categories of products. For the first year in many years, I am not starting it with having a Prime membership.

-Drink less beer/alcohol. No beers on school nights unless it's for a social outing and keep it lighter quantities. Weekends are open.

-Take a nice late summer/early fall trip to Denver to see my best friend. A show at Red Rocks is a given. May see Phish outdoors at a crazy venue for shits and giggles. Not my jam when streaming music, no pun intended, but I have to experience the live version just once.

- Shop a lot less but look on things like FB marketplace first in many cases. Like now I want a table lamp. Straight to FB marketplace. The times I have to buy, look for used vs new.

anybody else have some Project 2025 goals?

Planning to get better at playing accordion, and write/record a few synth rock songs. Try to get my experimental space banjo project off the ground, the banjo player I had in mind is moving so I'll either have to cover that part myself, or see if my bass player is interested in doing it. Organize a concert for Pride month featuring queer bands (my punk band will be on the bill, I may open as an acoustic act as well)--this one is already in the works, talking to other bands to see who else will be on the bill, already talked to the booker.

Cook more at home. More & more research is coming out about how horrible Ultra-Processed Foods (UFP's) are. They make up like 73% of the American diet!

I don't need to set goals. I live my life exactly as it was intended. :p

Also, with four small kids the only goal is to make sure everyone in the family survives and are happy.

Very good point. I appreciate what you do, raising four kids is super hard and a shit ton of work.

If I had four small kids my 2025 goal would be to perfect faking my own death lol

MORE?!? With all your meal prep methods and fancy cooking devices, you can still cook more at home? :p

I currently cook for 7 people (elderly family etc.). I use robots tho:

-Finish getting back in shape from my health issues last spring-fall
-Do a better job making sure I'm doing fun things in life. I was already doing a pretty good job of that but the health issues showed me there was still room for improvement

The chaos in our professional and personal lives has finally settled down. I'm also like 98% certain I'll find out in the next week or two that I achieved my career goal. Between that I might actually have time for a new hobby or two so I'm thinking of taking a 'how to make stained glass' class or something

Drop weight, exercise more, stack cash, & use all my PTO

It's pretty much the same 4 every year, I was successful on 3 of the 4 this year.
Need to drop some pounds alludes me. Food & beer are great!

Keep up all of my good habits after I have my first kid in May — exercise/lifting, eating well, playing music, doing well at work and saving lots of money.

I'm going to try to privatize Medicare and dissolve Social Security.

Also prepare to make changes, and prioritize what is important now and what can you pick up again when you are older and your kids prefer to hang out with friends anyway.

Congrats on the incoming little one. Having kids is a bit counterintuitive to saving money, unless you mean saving for their college tuition. I've been putting away $600 per month per kid every month since their births just to cover in-state university when they turn 18.
