Excuse me for such a n00b question but what is progressive scan exactly?
I am looking to purchase a home DVD player & see alot of PS players.
Do I need a special tv (HD) or receiver to get the most outta these?

The short story:
TV's typically display pictures as interlaced images with a 480 resolution. This is how the cable signal comes in. So every refresh, refreshes half of the screen. Thus it takes two refreshes to redraw the whole screen.
Progressive scan is not interlaced. It redraws the whole screen in one refresh. You'll commonly seen PS as 480p or something similar.

To use PS, you need a source that can transmit in that format. DVD players, HDTV stations, and satelite TV decoders are the only two that I am aware of as for now. To display it, you need a HDTV.

Hope that helps.

<< Yes ... Progressive Scan is useless if you don't have an HDTV. >>

I thought the SDTV sets could display 480p. Kinda obsolete I know, but cheaper than HDTV if that is a consideration.

Hmm... does the Creative Dxr3 (rebadged Hollywood+ card) do progresssive scanning?

I don't know for sure, but I'd bet money the answer is no. Most likely it only has s-video output, not the component output required for progressive scan output.

I had a guy try to demo the differences between progressive scan and normal scan on a highdef system. He was hard pressed to be able to show any difference. He said on occasion you could see some subtle differences. He said the only reason he purchased his progressive scan dvd player was for peice of mind know that there was not a weak link in his home theater system.

Not sure if the DXr3 drivers will allow it, but if you get DVD Genie, it can enable PS on the card... I have an option for it on my H+...
