progressive rock/metal fans

What do you think of the new Voyager album (V)? I'm not much of a progressive fan (I really only listen to Opeth occasionally) but I'm liking this album a decent amount. Maybe I like it because it's not nearly as progressive as some of the other music out these days. A lot of it progressive stuff seems like there's nearly as much thought put into it as they'd like you to think 😛

I'm really digging "It's a Wonder"

and "Breaking Down"

Eh...can't get into this. It reminds me of newer Dream Theater. Still technically good but just uninteresting. And the singer is weird. It's like Cake started making prog metal.

I didn't care for either song. I'll stick with Dream Theater, Opeth, Queensrÿche and Rush to feed my progressive rock/metal needs.

Sounds good to me! I don't know if it's something I can listen to over and over but still good for a playlist here and there.

Just different tastes I guess. I've never enjoyed DT because I think their singer is weird. Don't like his voice most of the time so I just don't bother. Amazing music, just can't stand his voice.

Heavier bands that I think have a lot of prog tendencies.

Between the Buried and Me
Periphery
Gojira

Never heard of Gojira, but if they are like the first two, then I need to check them out ASAP, b/c BTB&M and Periphery are awesome.

Also, a new up and coming band called Intervals is really good. They used to be purely instrumental, but now have a singer. Their single "Epiphany" is like heaven to my ears. It flows so smoothly, yet has that taste of jent/metal to it. I liked them better with out the singer, but if you want to be mainstream, you need one.

Lastly, a talented progressive rock/metal band that's just instrumental that I like is Pomegranate Tiger. Their lead guitar player is awesome.

it's like Geddy Lee's voice, except more theatrical.

Voyager's back catalog is worth checking out as well if you like the new album.

You get used to it/learn to deal with it eventually. The music itself is just that good.

Liquid Tension Experiment. DT without the singer. And a decent amount of jazz/funk infused into the music.

It's not bad. Kind of reminds me of The National (the singing) with shades of other bands like Rush or Coheed or DT but nowhere near as good as any of them. It just seems to be missing "something", maybe it's originality or emotion or transitions, can't put my finger on it. For example, compare it to Coheed's Willing Well I and it falls short IMO.

Gojira are one of the most incredible metal bands of recent years. Awesome stuff. Especially the album "From Mars to Sirius"

Gojira is fucking insane. They're amazing live too. Look them up on youtube.

Also if you like instrumental, check out Animals as Leaders.

Yeah I just checked them out. Very nice.

Haha Tosen Abasi is insane. I didn't think it was possible for a nonhuman to move his fingers and hands so fast over that many strings.

I have to say I really don't care for the lead singer. Otherwise I like them.

Definitely check these guys out.
