Programs won't run properly after upgrading to quad core

I just replaced my dual core with a quad core and some of my programs won't run correctly. Does anyone have any idea why. The old chip was an E4500 and the new one is a Q6600. I am running an ASUS P5K-E motherboard.

Well the programs that would not work were my security camera software. Windows media player 11 and Zune Software. The basic stuff worked like office etc. I ran a CPU performance tests on it from cpubenchmarks.net and it passed that ok.

It is a moot point because I tried to put the E4500 chip back in and it won't boot. The fan comes on and there are no error beeps but it won't boot. I put the Q6600 chip back in and it won't boot either. Looks like the motherboard is dead. I don't get anything on the screen.

Whatever the case may be, I just got the system up and running correctly so its going to be days or weeks before I get all the crap working again unless the MB comes back to life.

Did you clear the boards CMOS between changing cpu?
Some motherboards have special options in the bios they load depending on the cpu installed.
Without those the cpu may appear to work fine, but act odd depending on the situation.

If you wish to troubleshoot, I suggest the following steps:

1) Remove the CPU. With a magnifying glass, examine the pins of the CPU socket, looking for bent ones. If damage is found, you can try to straighten the pin(s).

2) Remove the motherboard from the computer.

3) Replace the following:
a) A single memory module
b) The video card
c) The CPU/Heatsink/Fan (applying suitable heatsink compound)

4) Keeping the motherboard OUTSIDE THE CASE, temporarily attach the power supply connectors, a keyboard, and the "Power On" switch leads to the motherboard.

5) See what happens. It's possible that something got bumped during the CPU changeouts.

6) If this doesn't work, consider trying a different power supply.

The power supply, both CPU's, Memory, and graphics card all work in other machines. The Bios did see the change when I went to the Quad core. When I went back all was dead. The motherboard will turn on the fans for a few seconds then shut down then turn them back on and stay on at that point. I can't remember what the standard warrantee/RMA on the MB is. I bought it as a separate component new in box from newegg. I may upgrade to a P5Q MB.

Just an update to this situation. I ended up putting a new system together and my security camera system won't view my cameras some of the time with the Q6600 CPU. If I put an E4500 Dual core in the problem goes away. I am going to try a Q9300 chip tonight to see if the problem comes back with a different quad core. Is there any reason the program should care if the CPU is quad or dual core?

I upgraded too and my issue is everything runs so much slower.
On boot-up it takes 3-4 min for wireless network to connect, and waiting for
hd activity light to cease a constant access, and for the hp printer app to load as well as windows live onecare. Its like boot, take a 10 min break, then maybe the pc will be ready to go.
Strange...!

Sportage, Have you defraged your hard disk lately? Go to start then run then type msconfig and go to startup. Get rid of as much of that stuff as you can. Lots of bloat wear hides there. Some stuff you need some you don't.

I put the Q9300 chip in and it works fine. The Q6600 chip is not working right and does not seem much faster than a dual core. The Q9300 chip flys. It will have to go back to where I borrowed it from. The Q6600 is going back to Newegg. So the issue is definately not something about my software that makes it incompatible with a quad core.

This stupid chip cost me alot of time. I ended up killing my motherboard trying to figure out what was wrong. I had to reload my whole system and replace the motherboard. This the first Intell chip I have had a problem with.
