Programs won't open after bootup

I reformatted my machine a couple weeks ago and have had annoying problems ever since. After a restart, some programs won't start up. If I click the shortcut to it, it'll display the hourglass for a couple seconds and it works, then all of a sudden it stops doing anything, almost like it's mocking me saying "I did it! What next?" when it didn't do anything. The programs that do this vary (often it's Firefox, but right now Firefox is fine but others won't work), but often a couple of the programs are the process manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and ProcessXP, so I can't start anything up to check the programs that are running (see if it needs to be killed and restarted). If I restart again, it's often OK.

You might try Kaspersky's online virus scanner to get a second opinion on the possibility of covert enemy action 😉 http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Use Internet Explorer since this is an ActiveX-based scanner.
