I personally use vIRC, but since mIRC is more popular it's easier to find people that can help you with scripting. Of course, vIRC has mouse gestures....
 
Trillian Pro 3.0 Alpha has better IRC chat. 3.1 will improve on it which is planned to come out a month or two after 3.0.

What's wrong with mIRC? It doesn't take much to beat trillian IRC, but with how popular mIRC is it's kind of hard to believe it sucks... I mean I used it a long time and it does everything you need an IRC client to do, was very easy to find scripts for it, etc. I only switched because I wanted to try something new.

Big, buggy, shareware, Windows only, not as customizable as good clients (irssi, BitchX, epic4), etc.
 
XCHAT is great in the latest incarnation on windows. . .

You have to get the free version though compiled by a guy named silver - search google for silver and xchat 2.4

And on top of that the scripting language is ugly and OMG slow.

As opposed to Trillian, which is just plain ugly, and is also slow, much slower than mIRC? I tried using Trillian, truely I did, for about six months, purely for IRC, and ... I just couldn't get used to the bizzaro avante-garde UI, and .. the speed, mIRC just seems much more efficient and faster in terms of screen updates. I'm sure that Trillians UI that uses transparency and rounded corners might be a factor in that too, I was using the default skin.
