Programs randomly closing

Ok, I'm not exactly sure what is going on. I haven't installed any new software recently and I have run virus scan and found nothing. But programs keep randomly getting closed. I'll be playing a game or whatever and it will just close. Really anoying.
Anybody have any clues?

OS is Win XP by the way

Programs getting closed = crashing (terminating with an error message, usually), or just disappearing from the screen?!
 
Download Prime95 and run it in the "Stress" mode. If it doesn't close, crash, or break in 10 hours, at least you know your hardware is OK.
 
I'm almost positive it isn't hardware. I have run prime before and had no problems and also when the program does close my HD chatters(like when you open something- I'm sure you know the noise) and it just goes back to windows. Everything else is still running except for whatever window/app I was using at the time.
