Programs have disappeared

I'm not sure when it happened, but I just noticed that a bunch of program icons are missing from my start screen. I'm not sure how many or exactly which ones, but I do know that Wordperfect and Quattropro are not there. I tried the Windows program menu and they don't show up there either. So I look in the Wordperfect Suite folder and the programs aren't even there. No one else works on this computer and I haven't deleted anything. Most programs appear to still be OK, at least the icons are on the start screen, but I'm sure some other stuff is missing too because I use icons groups and one has been cut by half. Anyway, what goes on here? Is there a way to more thoroughly refresh the directory listings than just rebooting? All ideas appreciated.

Hmm, so if you go to File Explorer you can't even find the applications?

If you go to Control Panel and then to Programs and Features, does the application still show installed? If it does, select it and see if it offers the repair option.

From the info you provided, it sounds like someone did access your computer (hacking or otherwise) or you have some type of malware at work.

ketchup79 - neither method you suggested will list the Wordperfect or Quattropro programs. PresentationsX6 icon, which I never use, is still on the screen and that program is present in the Wordperfect Suite folder, but not the others. The programs are still on the computer, however, because I can open data files directly and that starts each program properly. I just can't see them or find them. I've searched WP and Corel directories. I can reinstall them but I wanted to learn something here.

If the programs still work, maybe someone set them as hidden. In Windows File explorer, check the option to show hidden files.

Files not hidden, but I tracked down the executables and created new icons.....opened the programs via data files then looked in Task Manager for the correct .exe files, then search worked and I found the files buried about 6 folders deep along with all the Suite files. Wordperfect suite appears in the File Explorere but not the individual programs.....didn't know it behaved this way. Any, I've no idea what caused me to lose these and several other shortcuts in the first place, except for the gremlins.

Was it automatic desktop cleanup? IS there a folder on your desktop called "Unused shortcuts"?

There is many reasons why shortcuts go missing both good and bad.

Apparently the programs did not disappear. Only the links got deleted. That can happen many ways. Glad you found the .exe files and made new links. Totally endorse Ketchup79's comment on 8.
