Programs for a Fresh Windows Install

Yo, I'll be building a new computer from scratch this weekend and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about programs to install.

Btw, I will be using Windows 7 Ultimate and I plan on using Chrome as my browser instead of Firefox. I use Chrome at work and love it and Firefox at home sometimes annoys me.

By the way, what do you guys think of having a sticky in this forum just listing a bunch of great apps for the different categories? I guess someone mentioned this before, but I am wondering why there isn't one.

All you ever need after installing Windows, installing drivers, and running Windows Update.

I'm still a fan of Office 2010 over any of the freeware alternatives. I've had too many issues with functionality and compatibility with Office created files to really put up with it. Office Home and Student is ~$100 and worth the price IMO. People have different views on payware - mine is that some is worth shelling out for.

Agree on the ninite suggestion - great little program for initial installs

Agree on Office 2010 -but if you aren't a heavy user, Libre-Office is really nice and you can't beat free

if you really can't stand adobe reader, Sumatra is a nice alternative as well

Totally agree there!

Nothing comes close to MS Office
 
I wouldn't use MS Office you gave it to me. LibreOffice isn't just freeware, it's libre software. You get the source code, and the authorization to change it if you desire. You can also give it away or sell it. LibreOffice gives you the freedom of choice. MS Office doesn't come close.

I have no interest in changing the source code. When I use Office I need to get work done. Office 2010 allows me to do that MUCH more efficiently. And the .docx thing isn't a big deal either. Because I can still save my data in whatever format I want. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying libre office and open office are bad. In fact, I use OpenOffice quite a bit and I like the idea of ODF. But for me personally, I find Office 2010 to do much more for me.

I suggest if you are going to make a backup, make it before you add all the extra crap, I mean useful apps, back to the OS. So get all the updates, security patches, etc. and use nLite to create a fresh OS backup that will save you countless hours for the next fresh install.
