Programs are fighting

Ok, I did try to run TSC and Folding@Home together (both GUI versions, no screensavers), and FAH wasn't getting a chance to even start running, and if I tried to play a video game or something, the game would stutter all over the place.

I have turned off FAH for the moment and just let TSC run until I get some tips on how to force them to share time. I played UT2003 today with just TSC running and it was fine.

I know that if I did the research I could have found the answer, but I've been really busy and will be for a few days and so it was easier to just post here and get it fixed faster.

Folding@Home does not affect gaming performance, unless you changed a priority option during setup or configuration. F@H is very configurable, and rarely has problems that are its fault when running with other programs. However, a few other DC clients do not share very well. Unless TSC has options for process priority (and possibly % of CPU utilization), you'll probably just have to give up F@H if you want to run TSC. 🙁

on each of my two computers, I run DF, F@H and CB at all times..... my gaming performance seems to be unaffected. (ZoneAlarm steals more 3DMarks than the DCs do and even this is only ~100 marks out of 12,500)

While I am not surprised when you did TSC and F@H that only one got the cycles... (this is frequently the case. some DC projects just do not cooperate well with eachother..... for instance, D2OL did not let DF crunch). But I am surprised you see difficulties with only F@H running.

It really does sound like the priority has been upped in your install.... might want to check that.

But he hasn't run F@H by itself (or if he has, he didn't say so). Troubleshooting by running each thing at a time would be best.

Right. I had them both running. My game stuttering really could have been anything; because I only played for a couple minutes and then just assumed it was the DC's hogging things up. I'll check the settings on TSC, and if I can't get them both to crunch on this pc, I will run TSC on this one and FAH on my wife's when I rebuild hers. Then in the meantime I'll run Chessbrain with the TSC.

Thx all and have a nice day 🙂

yeah, ChessBrain is a cool little 'extra'. It needs an always-on internet connection, but it runs with anything great (AFIK).

No matter what I crunch, I stick CB with it.... kind of like a freebie 😀
