I still have a couple years (a little over one if I can handle my 19 credit hours this term), and time to start planning. My fiance will graduate in one year, so she'll be working a real job while waiting for me. There?s down payment on a house, maybe a newer car. We've worked out timings for marriage and honeymoon, a couple options depending on finances. We know we want kids after getting financially settled, but fairly early in our lives (which to us is mid 20's). No pregnancy at 35~40 says she.

So, considering that she'll be a microbiologist, and I already work at home in a loosely IS type job, I should stay at home with the kids I think. She?d probably go crazy being cooped up inside anyway, she practically beats me up when she's home sick right now. A "go - getter".

And that leads to my question: Any skills, languages, etc, that will help me to be better suited to working from home? I've heard a few terms, "freelance" programming type things. Is this best target towards just any popular language, Java or C++ maybe, or should I try to bone up on something more obscure to try to make myself more of a commodity? Ruby, LISP, whatever?

I was originally thinking of sticking to IS type work, programming/running servers, but the field seems to be going down a little.
