I went out last night for a couple of beers with a friend from work,
and as we were alking about some computer stuff with my bud, the guy next to us got into the conversation and he started to tell us he is a programmer for a big finacial firm.
It took me about 10 minutes to figure out this m0f0 is one of these statisticians who got into programming somehow and thinks he is a programmer.
He was tring to impress us with his BS but he was too dumb to realize that he was talking to people who know what they are talking about.
I hate this kind of guys because as they can impress N00bs, they think they are the sh!t.
And the sader part is that he probably makes over 100k a year for being a programmer when he doesn't know jack. (the sad part is that a lot of good programmers are looking for jobs)

oh well
I just wanted to get a bit of my anger away by sharing this

Wait, let me get this straight...You go out to a bar, and get upset because some drunk idiot said something? I can't remember the last time I went to a bar and some drunk idiot didn't say something that ticked other people off. Get over it.

yes I am a programmer (or was a least, I am more into network security these days)

and what makes me mad is not this one guy in particular but the attitude of this kind of losers in general

I find it rather humorous.

I'm a software developer and I do a lot of consulting, so I often spend time working with end-users on-site. I developed a call center platform that about 64 agents use simultaneously, and whenever I walk in the room to respond to an issue with the client I get inundated with "What do you do?", "Can you get me a job?", "How old are you?", "How much money do you make?" kind of questions. The most humorous are the ones with the pseudo-"computer guys." A few of my favorites:

He: "Do you have your A+ certification?"
Me: "No."
He: "Oh, so you don't actually write software?"

Me: "You can't enter your login name because you took focus off the box by clicking on your game that you shouldn't be running."
He: "Hey man, I know computers. I used to be a tech."
Me: "Really? Cool."
He later on: "What are all those modems doing in the corner?"
Me knowing what he was talking about but wanting to play with it some more: "Modems, what modems?"
He: "All those big modems in the corner!"
Me: "Oh, no, those are the old desktops from your old facility."

Yah, they were old Compaqs. Call center people aren't always the brightest :) It seems every other one of them "knows computers" though.

[edit]Note that I don't find people who are ignorant about computers humorous in general, just the ones who claim to "really know computers."[/edit]

Wannabe: knows a few tricks and a scripting language
Programmer: knows the basics of how programming works, and can usually start to figure our what's going on in a language they've never used by looking at it.
Good programmer: understands what the hardware is doing with the software.
Hacker: can picture what porn you're DLing by watching the switch's activity light.

you don't need to be a hacker for that any n00b can do that with an IDS or a decent packet sniffer
this is another issue that bother me actually, a lot of script kiddies think that as they can download software from the internet and run it against server or workstations to attack them or download a little sniffer to analyse network traffic, they are hackers.
I would say the real hacker is supposed to be a good programmer, a decent hardware guy; he is the one who actually understands the proagramming the weaknesses of the systems, how to exploit them, and how to write the code to do so. and there are very few of those..I have been doing security for a while now and have taken classes on IDS's some hacking training, read lots of books about it, I can write code in about any language out there and if I don't know one I can figure it out, and I still think I am really far away from the real hackers...If you get into it, you would be surpised how smart those people really are; it's scary when you talk to people who actuall think machine language.......

I am firmly entrenched in the Wannabe category.

I know a few tricks and a scripting language. ;)

I have a good job that I'm thankful for. I don't try and impress people by talking about computers, generally I try and stay out of those conversations, lest I get 0\/\/n3D.

I'm trying to decide whether I want to move forward into the programmer category or go back to school and get an English degree, which is what I enjoy.

Being payed well for what I do is making that decision much harder than it otherwise would be.

you don't have to do it for the money,
you should start to learn by yourself (like trying to learn to program java)
