Something like Visual Source Safe which I use in the office- but I don't have the software to install it at my house so looking for something free. Just something to keep copies of old versions as you check in/check out file- any extra features ate not really necessary- any suggestions?

I've been using Subversion on a project lately, and am pretty happy with it. It handle things like renaming files & reorganizing directory trees much cleaner then the other standard option - CVS.

Subversion isn't bad, it's a lot cleaner than CVS with regards to file renames, binary files, etc.

CVS is pretty nasty, especially considering what's available nowadays.

Subversion is much nicer than CVS and easy to switch to, but personally I like arch better. Its learning curve sucks though.
