Program XL R8R how do i set the display settings?

I have radeon 32 DDR and it'll always goto 640-480 16 bit and somehow its choppier then my TNT 1 (117/117). i've heard the limit with Radeon in low res in 16 bit. well how do i set XL R8R to run under higher resolutions with higher color depth? thanx
