If it was a hardware RAID array, no way that I'm aware of. Normal data recovery apps will not recover data from a broken and deleted RAID array.

If it was a software RAID array or no RAID then yes - I've had good luck with iRecover.

Gone how exactly? If you specify, it's more likely someone can help.

"Gone" as in "oops, formatted wrong drive". "Gone" as in shift+deleted.... etc

Ummm. That's different. Not sure where I got the impression you were running a RAID array.

You can SEE the files in the directory? How can you see them if you overwrote them? Have you run a scandisk to try and repair the drive?

I've had real good luck using DIY Data Recovery's iRecover to recover files from trashed hard drives: http://diydatarecovery.nl/. It's even recovered files from a drive that was repartitioned, reformatted, and had a new OS installed on it.

If you are sure you have overwritten them (how exactly?) and you can still see the filesnames somehow, then it's of no use - your data has been overwritten: it would just be that the MFT wasn't updated for some reason.

This sounds like a very suspicious scenario though and I still think there's more useful information that can be gleaned here.

no no, the files are still there, every program reports them being there, it is the MFT that is overwritten and now gone. so the files are there, but the MFT is messed up and can't tell my O/S where they are i am thinking.

If the MFT was gone you wouldn't see the files in the directory, so you need to explain what makes you think the MFT is overwritten.

I've recovered whole drives before when the MFT was damaged ... but how did this come to pass?

A detailed sequence of events leading up to the current situation would be very useful in helping you to a successful solution.

There are many tools to recover data ... but I would need to know how it happened to guide you to how to recover.

Thanks

If you believe the files are still there, the MFT is not 'gone', as it's the thing that lists the files. Additionally, the first extent of each file is actually stored in the MFT. So if it was indeed gone you would (by definiton) have lost the first 1-3k of each and every file.
