program to normalize mp3 audio (needs to modify the actual mp3 for line out)

Ive seen a bunch of semi normalizers but want to find one that will physically edit the mp3 so i my songs will work better on my ipod line out in my car. I have a problem with half of my music is movie soundtracks (which are generally soft), and rap/rock (which are generally loud).

I know itunes can do it but from what ive read it just writes to the tag and wont apply to the line out on an ipod... so i need something (if it exists) that could alter the real mp3's volume. (if such a program exists)

I use the "Normalize" filter in Soundforge all the time. Works great for me.

If you actually edit the songs, wouldn't you be recompressing the mp3s?

EDIT: I heard that the built in iTunes normalization works on the iPod. I've never tried it though.

it does but only on the headphone out.... it wont normalize the lineout (im not 100% sure but i think it writed something to the id3 tag that tells it how to adjust which wouldnt work in a lineout situation)

Ah. I see. Is the line out the one that comes from the special iPod connector? My car charge has an audio jack built into it so I can charge and play mp3s at the same time. I'd actually like to normalize my mp3 for car usage too so please update your post if you find a solution.

most of my music isnt even from filesharing..... (well unless you consider allofmp3 sharing) but like i orig said i have alot of movie soundtracks and they dont mix too well with my other stuff.

mp3gain does exactly what you want....which, I assume, is make all your music output at about the same loudness.
