Program to create complete system backups?

My computer will be running fine, but after installing a program and tweaking stuff it goes mad and nothing seems to work, one thing affects another, ect.

So I want a way to return to the exact way everything was before I did that certain thing. Windows XP system restore isn't quite what I want, it doesn't take it back to the EXACT way it was before.

What program can I use? I've heard of Norton Ghost, is that what it is? How exactly does it work?
