Program to access flaky HDD?

As the title suggests, I have a Maxtor 160GB HDD in a 3.25" USD 2.0 enclosure that is making some noise and certainly not so healthy. Once I plug it in to my PC, it seems OK and XP picks it up, but then it locks up my PC when I try to access it and/or manipulate any files on it.

I know that there are some programs out there that can help you to recover your data on dead HDD's, does anybody here know af any off hand? Perhaps a free utility?!?!

I would suggest plugging the drive into a standard IDE for the best chance of successfully recovering data. If the filesystem is intact and the drive is mostly healthy, you should be able to get the data with an offline boot CD like UBCD4WIN or Knoppix. Both are free and you can backup the data to an external drive, flash drive, or another system on a network. Check out http://www.ubcd4win.com/ and http://www.knoppix.org/. If the filesystem is damaged, you may need a data recovery program such as Ontrack's Easy Recovery or GetDataBack. Unfortunately these programs are not free, but GetDataBack has been a favorite of mine and you can find a trial at http://www.runtime.org/downloads.htm.
