For about 3 years now I have had a floppy that had a small program (dos based) that when executed it would completely delete a entire hard drive. Then it would automatically do a re-format...

Well, I lost this floppy and can't remember the program...

Something like CleanDrive, but free :)

It must only work in dos mode (no Win9X GUI), and hopefully freeware

Make a batch file/executable that would restart the computer in dos mode and then add to the autoexec.bat lines that would reformat the computer, no need to erase all the data because a reformat would do this. If you just wanna format fast you can LLF the HD in dos mode.. but if you don't know what that is, don't try it.

You could get a disk from your drive's manufacturer that writes all 0s to the entire drive. I know Maxtor and WD have them.

Noooo...

Format does not delete a hard drives contents. I can still get information back on a formatted/fdisked drive with other software.

I need a very secure "eraser." I am currently using IBM's "wipe" program to do this... but need more.

An example for using such software is when you sell, donate a hard drive or Computer.

How badly do you need to wipe your HD? With a scanning electron microscope in a lab, it is possible to recover data that has been wiped over with 0 and garbage four or five times.

Here you go Doc...BCWipe

Use this to TOTALLY delete ALL contents of your HD. It takes awhile to complete but once it is done, NO ONE will be able to read anything from your HD. You can also use it to "wipe" your trash bin when you delete stuff in Windows. ;)

Since I work on peoples computers, I often exchange H.D's or take computers in and provide them for donations (if they ask). So to ensure their security and eliminate my liability, I would delete their H.D's while they were watching.

Thanks but BCWipe only runs within Windows, it's only a "shell" extention. I need a program that runs off a floppy, and at a dos prompt. BCWipe is really like a "Recycle Bin" on steroids :)

Actually, IBM's "Wipe" program is working... okay. It's not quite what I was using, but it might be "good enough." However, I think I will end up buying that CleanDrive program for $30

Now, if I only could remember the name of that program I lost...

That's not true. My friend used it for the SOLE reason to wipe his HD CLEAN. It basically writes zeros to the entire HD. However, you still can use it within Windows. ;) Just put it on your 98 boot disk and use it in DOS. ;)
