ok so i used to just use virtualdub for everything however it seems that many new videos are encoded with a VBR audio track and virtualdub doesnt like that at all, the sync gets all off, ive even tried virtualdub mod which is supposed to work with VBR tracks but i havent had any luck

so are their any other programs that will cut and splice video w/ a VBR track , and that are prefibily free

if you open it in something like gspot (or any of a number of other tools) does it say that there is an audio track to the file?

sorry, i don't know what to say. i don't find myself often cutting clips from avi files with variable bitrate audio. that version has worked for me in the past, but i don't know how buggy it is.

the other (somewhat painful) technique is to extract the mp3 file as a wav file, mux it back with the avi file and then cut it and reencode the newly cut audio with a direct stream copy of the video.

i haven't tried it, but you could also try converting the avi file to another container that supports VBR audio better like matroska. that might support your cutting better.
