hi guys,

i'd like to know if there is a way to have the C:\Program Files directory set to a different directory, such as my D:\proggies, or C:\apps, instead of going by default to C:\Program Files. I heard that there might be a way to do this via changing some settings in the registry. if possible, can the same be done to change the default location of the C:\Documents and Settings directory which is created in Win2k and XP machines?

thanks in advance....

You can install windows on any formatted fat or ntfs partition you want, however you would have had to make that decision before you installed. I've heard that Partition magic might have a utiliity to do just this but im not sure nor do I have much faith in Partition magic's effectiveness.

There is a setting in TweakUI to change default locations of system folders, documents, etc..

Changing that will break a lot of things. During the initial install a lot of things put stuff in C:\Program Files and you'll have to reregister all those things.

NTFS permissions are also defined in a very particular way on the "Program Files" folder. Moving it may alter this condition.

thanks for all the great info guys!!! i will try TweakUI out on a WinXP box. I dont mind having to register some apps again, as this is being done on a clean install, and in case i break anything, i will just re-ghost my windows image.
