Program event sounds in Windows 8.1

I assembled a new Windows 8.1 system over the holidays and have lost many of the program event sounds -- like Windows logon, logoff etc.

The sound is working perfectly. I can play audio CD's with good quality sound. If in Control Panel I go to Sound the pull down menu does not show Windows Logon, Log off etc. so there is no way to associate a sound with them since they don't appear.

Most of the program events have no sound associated with them but as a test I associated from the sounds menu the windows logon sound with Calendar Reminder. In Test it is a gong-like sound -- not the familar Windows logon

Two questions:
How do I get back the familar menu of program events; Windows Logon, Windows Logoff etc.
How do I get the familar sounds back. I am sure there must be a way to import the wav files for the sounds with which I am familar. Of course that does no good if I can't get back the old program events too so I can associate the sound with the event.

Thanks for your help

Just a personal rant. I am from New Mexico and I put using Windows 8.1 right up there with being beaten with a cholla

Starting in Win8, Microsoft eliminated several of the old Windows sounds - the objective being to reduce Windows load tome. There is a free utility that will let you change the Windows Start Up sound. Nio more Exit Windows, however.

Spend some time browsing results of Googling Windows 8.1 Sound Changes.

Good to hear from you again. I should have suspected it was a Microsoft change. Us old folk don't like change.

Note added:
Can't argue it is fast in bootup. Wise Care reports consistently 16 or 17 seconds boot up

I followed up on corkyg's suggestion and read up on the sound changes Microsoft made in Windows 8.1 and am just going to keep the fast bootup and not try the work around to get a Windows Logon sound. It doesn't serve any useful function. It's just what I am used to.

Thanks for the replies.
