9.99 + shipping (5.50 for UPS ground in my case)

Clearly not a high end unit, however might be good for a back-up or testing.

Did a search, didn't see this.... hope it's not a repost

Guess it's the classic you get what you pay for. They also have a Raidmax 350 for $13 here

As to the Raidmax 350, I've used a couple in low-end systems (Duron's or lower XP cpu's) and they worked fine. Nothing special though and their voltages aren't as good as say a 300 watt Sparkle unit but you can't beat the price. I'm not sure I would go for the Proforma but I haven't used or had experience with it.
EDIT:Just looked at the link for the Proforma. Horrible 3.3 + 5 volt rating @ 155watts. As a comparison, a Sparkle 300 watt PS has this combined voltage @ 200 watts. Sparkle is not a high end, high cost PS either. It is just a good solid performer, IMHO. I'd say that this is a deal killer for the Proforma. You wouldn't be able to run much of a system reliably with this PS.

yeah I read about the Akida supply awhile ago, and have been debating a lot on whether to pick one up. Only thing that stopped me was that I was considering buying an antec case that might've come with a good PS already. If you need a cheap solid PS, it looks like the Akida is a winner

Pcimicro has is for $21 shipped; good reseller ratings.

But the PS seems a bit noisy, although otherwise good. Nothing a new fan can't cure.

I bought a 550 W dual-fan Achieve PS locally for $22. I thought I was getting a bargain. The thing was DOA.

I took it back, and one CSR told me not to get them as they had another return earlier that day. Another CSR told me that they do not get "too many returns" of these. (How many is "too many"? Two in one day was already too many for my tastes.)

So, my guess is unless you buy them in quantity (hopefully not all from te same batch) and can afford time to swap faulty PSs, don't bother.

How was others' experience with Achive PSs?

i used to ascribe to the theory that a cheap power supply was more than enough for most machines....that is till i had a codegen psu and a powermagic psu go in a weeks worth of time. Took 3 ram sticks and a mobo in the process. Spend anything less than 35 dollars on a psu and your just rolling the dice on your hardware making through another week. The silverstone 360 watter at newegg is a nice basic psu for around 35 shipped

360W, yeah, right!

Sparkle 300W is about as (low-capacity) as you'd want to go for a modern build... anything less and even if it works it may die in a few months, taking the motherboard with it. I'm not implying that Sparkle is junk, only that it's a very small amount of $ saved to go with a generic over their 300W model.

Ratings of amps on generics can't be trusted, no point even reading the label if you have no trust in the company that made it.

The comparison with the Fortron 530w psu was very impressive. Not saying its anywhere near on par with the FSP, but for $24 shipped its a very good deal if it just works like what's in that review. I have to try it out.

what exactly happens when a PSU dies and how does it take hardware with it? I've only owned two power supplies in my life, the original 300w that came with my Enlight case and a CompUSA 400w PS (which currently powers a 2500@3200, 9800pro, 2 HD's, floppy, dvd burner, and cd burner with no problems. Am I just getting lucky with this thing, or have I been treading on dangerous territory for the last year and a half
