I just added a Windows 2000 Server to my home network to mess around with a domain. the 2000 server is acting as a DNS server, and a is running Active Directory. Everything seems to be fine, the XP Pro client machine is setup to use the 2000 server as it's primary DNS machine, I can ping the server by name, etc. Everything seems to be working fine.

Here is the problem though, since I had been using this XP install for awhile, I have a local profile that I am used to, and has all my proper settings, and now I want to use that same profile, but be a member of my new domain. So, I figured I could just copy the local profile saved in "Documents and Settings\Ted," to the directory that was created for the domain user after the first logon "Documents and Settings\TedM.HOMEDOMAIN". Then when I logon to the TedM account on the HOMEDOMAIN, it should use that copied profile, which is an exact copy of the Ted account local to the machine.

When I logon though, I get an interesting problem. For the most part, it is the same profile that was copied over, most of my start menu items are there, most of the desktop icons are there, my Recent Documents are there, my favorites are there, but, there are a few weird differences. The wallpaper is set to this ugly gray background, the interface changes from the modified luna theme I was using, to the classic XP one, the My Computer, and My Network Places icons are missing, and the Quick Launch menu is missing. Now, you would think it would be simple to just enable that stuff for this profile, and off I go, right? Wrong. If I go to display properties, and tell it to include My Computer and My Network places on the desktop, they refuse to appear, no matter what. Also, the Recycle Bin icon that is on the desktop, it not really the recycle bin, I can't open it by clicking on it, and I can't put anything in it. There are also other odd interface problems, it won't let me switch from the new XP Control Panel view, to the classic view.

Anyone know what is going on here? I've searched on google for how to copy a local profile to a domain user profile, and they all say to do what I did, but this will just not work. Is it something weird with XP Pro logging on to a 2000 domain?

I'm not sure how you copied the profile to your network share, but it sounds like you just did a normal copy and paste. This does not work when copying profiles. You must right click on my computer and go to User Profiles. Highlight the profile you want to copy (you must be logged out of the profile when doing this) and click copy to. Find the profile on the server that you want to copy it to and change the user permitted to use to whoever you want to give access to. Then click OK

I've done it both ways, copy and paste, and through the User Profiles thing in System Setttings, neither worked. Here's the steps I took:

1)Log on to the HOMEDOMAIN using the TedM account so the TedM.HOMEDOMAIN profile was created in Documents and Settings.
2)Log out, and log back on with the Administrator account
3)Right click on my computer>Properties>Advanced>User Profile Settings
4)Select the orginal Ted account that is local to that machine, and clicked copy to, and then copied it to the TedM.HOMEDOMAIN directory in Documents and Settings
5)Log out, and log back in with the TedM account on the HOMEDOMAIN
6)Everything is fubared

I know its using that profile, because the times on some files are changing, but it's just not quite right. It's like a bastardized version of my profile, that I can't get back to normal.

Here's some other oddities I've noticed this bastardized domain profile showing. Like I said, it is pretty much the same profile that was copied over, there are just weird problems with it, that make it unusable.

1)If I switch to Classic Start Menu, all of my system desktop icons appear (My Computer, My Network Places, My Documents, Recycle Bin), but the minute I switch back to the XP Start menu, they disappear.
2)I cannot unlock the taskbar. I enabled my Quick Launch menu, and all my items are there, but I can't unlock the taskbar to expand it to show them all. When I try to unlock it, the item stays checked.
3)No matter what theme I select, when I go back into that menu, it always says Modified Theme.
4)Cannot Select the Windows Classic theme. It runs into an unspecified error, but it works fine for every other profile. All other themes work fine though.

I'm sure there are others too that I haven't found yet.

OK, I really need to stop repsponding to my own threads, but I got it to work. Here's what I did.

1)Logged on to the machine with the local administrator account
2)Went to the local user Accounts menu and added the domain user TedM as a user of the machine
3)Added the domain user TedM to the Administrators group on the local machine (just like the local profile I'm trying to copy to it is)
3)Logged onto the machine into the domain using the TedM account, so the directory was created in Documents and Settings
4)Logged out, then logged in as a local administrator
5)Opened the User Profile Settings, and copied the local Ted account profile to the directory the domain user TedM profile was stored (Documents and Settings\TedM.HOMEDOMAIN)
6)Logged back in using the TedM account, and it worked

The only thing not carried over were my email passwords, but that was simple.
