I just added a Windows 2000 Server to my home network to mess around with a domain. the 2000 server is acting as a DNS server, and a is running Active Directory. Everything seems to be fine, the XP Pro client machine is setup to use the 2000 server as it's primary DNS machine, I can ping the server by name, etc. Everything seems to be working fine.
Here is the problem though, since I had been using this XP install for awhile, I have a local profile that I am used to, and has all my proper settings, and now I want to use that same profile, but be a member of my new domain. So, I figured I could just copy the local profile saved in "Documents and Settings\Ted," to the directory that was created for the domain user after the first logon "Documents and Settings\TedM.HOMEDOMAIN". Then when I logon to the TedM account on the HOMEDOMAIN, it should use that copied profile, which is an exact copy of the Ted account local to the machine.
When I logon though, I get an interesting problem. For the most part, it is the same profile that was copied over, most of my start menu items are there, most of the desktop icons are there, my Recent Documents are there, my favorites are there, but, there are a few weird differences. The wallpaper is set to this ugly gray background, the interface changes from the modified luna theme I was using, to the classic XP one, the My Computer, and My Network Places icons are missing, and the Quick Launch menu is missing. Now, you would think it would be simple to just enable that stuff for this profile, and off I go, right? Wrong. If I go to display properties, and tell it to include My Computer and My Network places on the desktop, they refuse to appear, no matter what. Also, the Recycle Bin icon that is on the desktop, it not really the recycle bin, I can't open it by clicking on it, and I can't put anything in it. There are also other odd interface problems, it won't let me switch from the new XP Control Panel view, to the classic view.
Anyone know what is going on here? I've searched on google for how to copy a local profile to a domain user profile, and they all say to do what I did, but this will just not work. Is it something weird with XP Pro logging on to a 2000 domain?
