Profile corrupted?

Nocturnal

Lifer
hi, im running windows xp professional and when i start my computer up it tells me that my "profile" is corrupted and that it is going to load a temporary one in which none of my settings that i set will stick.

can anyone tell me what i can do to get my old profile back without having to format?

I've never figured out a way... I always rename my "\Documents and Settings\Chris" folder, then delete my account, then create another account with the same name, then start copying back data. You cannot copy all the files back, since one of them is usually the one that caused the problem.

I dont know about encrypted folders - you may not be able to view them. In the "application data\microsoft" folder is a "credentials" folder... if you copy the contents there, maybe it will do something? I have admin privileges on my account so that might be why I can read encrypted folders made in previous profiles.

the problem with that solution is that it always ends up with the new profile corrupted - one of the files in the documents and settings directory must be getting damaged. but if the problem isn't there, they're solution will work well.
