"Major League Gaming, the world's largest organized video gaming league, on Monday will announce a programming deal in which USA Network will air seven one-hour episodes in the fall, featuring the pro circuit and its players.

Though video gaming fans have been able to follow competitions on game Web sites for years already, MLG's television deal marks the first time regular TV viewers would be able track the ups and downs of a pro tournament, watching video gaming as a new kind of extreme sport."

Your takes?

Destined for failure.

Gamer thoughts. "Hrmmm....I can watch someone play Quakewars for the next half hour or I can play Quakewars myself for the next half hour...decisions decisions decisions."

And Raduque, you haven't seen annoying signatures until you've seen some guys two line post and his three pic sig. Each pic is about the size of the OP's whole post, sig and all.

If we live in a culture that respects gaming as some type of mental achievement akin to say, Chess (which is just a board game, afterall), then yes, it would be a success. But seeing as most Americans artificially view (probably mainly due to the sterotypical jock vs geek mentality, even in geeks) video games as some inferior form of entertainment compared to, say, watching the movies (as if most movies these days have any sort of moral value or story to tell) or getting drunk and doing stupid stuff, I highly doubt it will succeed in the US.

Of course, if you were talking about a culture that is more electronically incline than say, a going out into the backyard and shooting some barrels culture, then you would probably be referring to South Korea. Oh wait, such PRIME TIME real-time video game coverage shows are already popular. Afterall, one in about six people own a copy of StarCraft:Brood War over there.

Oh yes, I've seen them. We practically have one here: JediYoda. Sigs like that make me cringe and want to stab somebody. Sorry for the threadjack, OP.

I remember way way back people thought watching golf tournaments on TV would fail because it would be too boring to watch. I'm guessing if they market it properly and show enough interesting action it'll catch on.
