Why do we feel the need to pay money to watch millionaires throw a ball around?

I was thinking about this as I read the Pacman NFL thread.

Every year these guys get worse and worse. I've decided I can't watch anymore. Spitting on fans, attacking fans, endless cheating, betting against their own games, throwing games, endless illegal activities off the playing field, no respect for the fans that pay their salaries.

I'm not saying everyone should quit watching pro sports, but for me enough is enough. It seems the professionalism left long ago.

While I know where you're comin' from......(and would LOVE to eliminate the bad apples myself).........I also know why we tolerate them.

They are the best of the best.

That said.........I do still remember the baseball strike and hockey debacle heard 'round the world.

There was no baseball. Then there was no hockey.........and guess what?? The world kept spinning!!

I, for one, wouldn't mind seeing EXTREME disciplinary actions exercised to correct the state of professional sports today. (i.e. You blow it, you're out for half a season. Blow it again, you're gone......forever!)

Sadly, it's a whole lot more than one or two bad apples. You have that many on every single team, on average. Probably more.

As long as they aren't on my fantasy team, i don't care what they do off the field or to fans.

I often wonder the same thing. What is professional sport? What makes the people who play football or baseball or basketball or any other sport so special? So what if you can put a ball in a hole in fewer strokes than any other human being alive? What does that do for humanity? Being able to run while carrying a ball and dodging people who are trying to knock you down doesn't make you a hero...ever. Doing it well makes you a spectacle at best. Something for the people who are doing the real work of advancing society to talk about around the water cooler.

Don't get me wrong. I love sports, football in particular, but professional athletes deserve no special privileges and should be grateful to live in a society that is able to support them for nothing other than their ability to entertain.

People vote with their wallets though. If people continue to pay whatever it costs for a ticket to the game, and the stadiums continue to sell out, and people continue to order pay per view events, team merchandise, etc., then the players will continue to get paid as much as they make.

It seems pretty ridiculous at some of the salaries that our professional athletes are making, and I totally agree with what you're saying, but as an avid fan of both sports AND music, why aren't "professional" musicians held to the same standard? For the most part the popular acts aren't even nearly half as talented in their field as professional athletes are and they make just as much as some of the highest paid of athletes.

Again though, it's all about people voting through their purchases. If some no-talent musician can sell out huge arenas and sell millions of CDs through their charisma or whatever, then they are going to be paid accordingly (although we know the record label takes a huge cut), regardless of how musically talented they really are.

What? If anything, the NBA is worse off.

pro soccer players are a bunch of p*ssies. they refuse to play a physical game and dive at every opportunity. it brings such great shame to a sport i love so much.

Am I gonna pay hundreds of dollar to attend a professional sports game? Am I gonna worship professional players like they are my hero? Am I gonna lose sleep if my team lose? No way.

But I will watch the game just because I am bored and I will watch the games for entertainment. People need to take it easy, professional players are people, people with lots of money, so there are gonna be drug users, gamblers, cheaters, or even criminals among them. But unless you see them as your role model or you invest all your emotions into those people, what's the big deal? Hollywood is even worse, do you stop watching movie or TV shows? Just take it easy and enjoy sports as what it is, an entertainment.

If your dad needs money, go ask

Mickey Mantle don't care about
