Has anyone here paid to have the data from a crashed HD retrieved?

Just had someone here at work ask about retrieving data from a crashed HD and they wanted to know the cost.

Depending on the amount and severity of the data, can be from $300 to $3000 and up.

If it's a run-of-the-mill hard drive crash I'd assume it to be in the lower half of that amount.

Now, how important is that data, and why the hell didn't they make backups? 😀
